Try to keep the ingredients to a uniform size. Feel free to add rutabagas if you like!
List of Ingredients
3 Cups Flour
1 1/2 tsp Salt
1 Cup Crisco
3/4 Cup COLD water
1 1/2 pounds ground chuck (I use round steak, cut in 1/4" cubes)
4 Cups cubed potatoes
3 Onions
2 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. Pepper
Garlic Powder (optional)
Oregano (optional)
Instructions
Sift flour and salt, and cut in Crisco as for pie crust. Add water and blend with a fork until it holds together.
Shape into a ball. (Can chill here till filling is ready.) Divide into 6 pieces. Roll each on a floured board and then add the filling. Seal the edges with water. Remember to slit the top so the steam can escape.
For the filling, cut all of the filling ingredients into uniformly-sized bits and mix all together with the seasonings. Feel free to adjust the seasonings to your taste.
Use about a cup of the filling to make each pasty. Place a pat of butter (about a tsp.) on top of the filling in each pasty before sealing, and remember to slit the top crust to the steam can escape.
Bake on a greased tin for 12-15 min at 400 degrees and then 30-45 min at 375 degrees.
Final Comments
This is a great picnic food as they'll keep warm for quite some time in aluminum foil. They can be held in the hands just like a sandwich.
