    Armenian Cake

    Source of Recipe

    Betsy Hubbard

    Recipe Introduction

When I was in the second grade, my family lived in Norfolk, Virgina. My mother met a woman at the zoo from Armenia, who shared this recipe with her. It has been a family favorite ever since.

    List of Ingredients

    • 2 cups brown sugar
    • 2 cups flour
    • 1/2 cup softened butter
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 tablespoon nutmeg (canned) or 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (fresh)
    • 1 cup sour cream/plain yogurt/soured milk/buttermilk
    • chopped nuts

    Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
    2. Completely mix flour and brown sugar.
    3. Work in butter with fingers until uniform in texture.
    4. Place half of this mixture in the bottom of a 9" pan. Smooth the mixture out, but do not press it.
    5. Add to the remaining mixture nutmeg and soda.
    6. Beat egg with sour cream and beat into the remaining dry mixture.
    7. Spread over dry mixture in the baking pan.
    8. Sprinkle with nutmeg and finely chopped nuts.
    9. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
