Armenian Cake

Recipe Introduction
When I was in the second grade, my family lived in Norfolk, Virgina. My mother met a woman at the zoo from Armenia, who shared this recipe with her. It has been a family favorite ever since.
List of Ingredients
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon nutmeg (canned) or 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (fresh)
- 1 cup sour cream/plain yogurt/soured milk/buttermilk
- chopped nuts
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Completely mix flour and brown sugar.
- Work in butter with fingers until uniform in texture.
- Place half of this mixture in the bottom of a 9" pan. Smooth the mixture out, but do not press it.
- Add to the remaining mixture nutmeg and soda.
- Beat egg with sour cream and beat into the remaining dry mixture.
- Spread over dry mixture in the baking pan.
- Sprinkle with nutmeg and finely chopped nuts.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
Final Comments
This cake may be served warm or at room temperature.
