    Recipe Introduction

We enjoy a family Fall outing of apple and pumpkin picking. What does one do with all those apples picked? Try my recipe for apple dumplings. You won't be disappointed!

    List of Ingredients

    6 med. size baking apples
    2 cups flour
    2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. alt
    2/3 cup shortening
    1/2 cup milk

    Sauce:
    2 cups brown sugar
    2 cups water
    1/2 cup butter
    1/4 tsp. cinnamon

    Recipe

Pare and core the apples. Leave whole. To make pastry, sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Cut in shortening until particles are about the size of small peas. Sprinkle milk over mixture and press together lightly, working dough only enough to hold together. Roll dough out. Cut into 6 squares and place an apple on each. Fill cavity of the apple with sugar and cinnamon. Pat dough around the apple to cover it completely. Fasten edges securely on top of apple. Place dumplings 1 inch apart in a greased baking pan.

Sauce: Combine the brown sugar, water and cinnamon. Cook for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add butter. Pour over dumplings and bake 45 to 50 minutes in 350 degree oven. I like to serve these hot with a wee little bit of cream!
