    Stained Glass Cookies

    Source of Recipe

    gold medal

    List of Ingredients

    3/4 cup sugar
    1/2 cup butter
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    2 medium eggs
    2 3/4 cups flour
    1/4 teaspoon salt
2 pounds colored hard candies or sour balls

    Recipe

    Recipe
Cream together the sugar, butter and vanilla. Beat in the eggs. In a seperate bowl combine the flour and salt. Gradually add to the egg mixture, scraping the bowl with a spatula and mixing only till a smooth dough is achieved. Divide the dough into 4 portions and wrap each portion in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least an hour.

Meanwhile, separate candies according to color and crush well. Cover cookie sheets with aluminum foil and grease lightly with shortening. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Working with a smal amount of dough at a time, roll it out on a floured surface to a generous 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutter and, holding the cutter in place, with a sharp knife 3/8 inch from the outer perimeter, carefully cut the same profile.

Remove cookie cutter and, using a wide spatula, transfer cookie outline to conform with center portion, then remove center. Reserve all scraps of dough to reroll and form additional cookie outlines.

Bake outlines** in a moderate oven for 3 minutes. Remove from oven and place desired color of crushed candies in center of each outline so that candy reaches top of dough(allow about 2 well crushed candies per cookie). Return to oven for 2-3 minutes or just till candies melt. DO NOT OVERBAKE! Set aside till completely cooled, then peel off foil. Makes 4-5 dozen cookies, depending on size of design.

**To hang in window-make a small hole in top of each cookie before baking
