All American Apple Pie

List of Ingredients
- For the Crust-
- This makes one crust. - For two repeat process.
- 1-1/3 cup flour
- 1/2 cup very cold butter ( sliced into pats.)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/4 cup ice water
- For Pie
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
- 8 Granny Smith Apples. peeled, cored and sliced
- Large brown paper bag (type used to put groceries in )
- Paper clips or fasteners
Instructions
- Pie Crust- With chopping blade in food processor, put in dry ingredients. Pulse two or three times to mix.
- Add cold butter. Then start machine and slowly add water until dough forms into a ball. (you may not need all the water)
- roll out to 1/8th thickness and put into pie plate.
- For Pie-
- pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Melt the butter a 2 qt. sauce pan stir in flour to form paste.
- Add water, white sugar, brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and simmer.
- Place apples on pie crust. Mounded slightly.
- Place upper crust on top (lattice or cutout designs)
- Gently pour hot liquid over pie, slowly so that it does not run off.
- Place pie in a brown paper bag. Grocery type bag.
- Turn edge of bag over and Secure with paper clips or fasteners. Place bag on cookie sheet and bake for 1 hr.
Final Comments
Note- I flattened the bag so that it wasn't too high.
I wasn't sure if it would catch on fire. It didn't and the pie came out nice.
