Old family recipe
Recipe Introduction
This was a family recipe often prepared by a career U.S. Navy chef for such dignitaries as President Harry S. Truman. Through the chef’s military career, he refused to share his recipe. Finally, when he retired, he allowed it to be published in a Navy newspaper.
List of Ingredients
½ Cup Butter
2 Cups Sugar
2 Teaspoons Vanilla
3 Eggs
3 Tablespoons Flour
1/4 Teaspoon Salt
1 Cup Buttermilk
1 Single-crust Pie Shell (9-inch) unbaked
½ Cup Chopped Pecans
Recipe
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
In a large mixer bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, adding ½ cup sugar at a time. Cream until mixture no longer feels grainy. Blend in vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
In a separate bowl, combine flour and salt. Add flour mixture to butter mixture, a little at a time. Blend in buttermilk to finish the custard.
Sprinkle pecans in bottom of crust; pour custard mixture over pecans and bake 1 hour 30 minutes. Best served at room temperature.
