List of Ingredients
1/4 cup shortening
2 1/2 cups superfine sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon lemon rind -- grated
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
3 eggs
4 cups flour -- sifted
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon anise seed
1 tablespoon ground cardamom
1/4 pound candied citron -- coarsely ground
1/4 pound candied orange peel -- coarsely ground
3 tablespoons hot milk
1 1/2 cups confectioner's sugar -- sifted
Recipe
1. Cream the first 8 ingredients. Beat in eggs, one at a time, and
mix thoroughly.
2. Stir in flour mixed with next 5 ingredients. Blend thoroughly.
Chill dough 2 hours.
3. Moisten hands and shape into 3/4" balls. Put on waxed paper and
let stand, uncovered, at room temperature overnight.
4. Preheat oven to 350°.
5. At baking time, brush some of the balls with a mixture of hot
milk and confectioner's sugar. Leave other balls plain.
6. Put 2" apart on greased and floured cookies sheets and bake for
about 15 minutes.
