Chili Stew with Dumplings

1/2 c. chopped onion
1 tbsp. shortening
2 lb. ground beef
2 tsp. chili powder
3 1/2 tsp. salt, divided
1 15 oz. can kidney beans
2 1/2 c. chopped potatoes
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 can tomato soup
2 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1 egg, beaten
3/4 c. milk
1 8 oz. carton sour cream
Recipe
Saute onion in shortening in skillet. Add ground beef, chili powder and 1 tsp. salt. Brown ground beef, stirring until crumbly. Drain grease and set aside. Combine beans, potatoes, pepper, soup, 2 tsp. salt and 5 cups water in a large soup pot. Bring to a boil. Add ground beef mixture. Simmer for one hour. Combine flour, baking powder, egg, milk and remaining 1/2 tsp. salt in bowl, mixing well. Drop by spoonfuls into simmering stew. Cook, covered, for 12 to 15 minutes, or until dumplings are cooked through. Stir in sour cream just before serving. Yields 12 large servings.
