Crockpot Bolognese Sauce

1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 pound Italian sausage
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 small carrot, grated
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 large clove garlic, crushed
1 (28 ounce) can diced, peeled tomato
2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon chopped, fresh oregano
1 tablespoon chopped, fresh basil
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup dry red wine
cooked pasta
Parmesan cheese, optionalRecipe
Remove sausage meat from casing. In a large skillet, brown ground beef and sausage meat, breaking up while the meat cooks. Add onion, carrots and celery after about 5 minutes; cook until onion is just tender. Drain well. Transfer ground meat mixture to the slow cooker. Add remaining ingredients, except pasta and cheese. Cover and cook on LOW for 5 to 7 hours. Makes about 8 cups. Spoon over hot pasta. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese, if desired. Serves 8.
