    1/4 cup shortening
    1 cup sugar
    1 egg, beaten
    1 cup flour
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
    1/2 cup chopped walnuts
    5 tart apples, peeled, cut fine
    2 tablespoons water
    Butter Sauce
    1/2 cup butter, melted
    1/2 cup heavy cream
    1 cup sugar
    1 tablespoon cornstarch

    Recipe



    Cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

    Combine shortening and sugar, add beaten egg. Sift together flour,
    baking soda, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add walnuts and apples and then add
    water. Mix well. Pour into a greased 9 x 13-inch cake pan. Bake 30
    minutes or until done.

    Sauce: Combine butter, cream, sugar and cornstarch. Bring to a boil
    and boil for 2 minutes. Add vanilla. Serve warm with cake.
