Grandma's Sugar Raisin Cookies

1 1/2 cups seedless raisins
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Recipe
Simmer raisins in water to barely cover, until water is all
absorbed. Set aside to cool. Cream sugar and shortening; add eggs
and vanilla; beat thoroughly. Sift together the dry ingredients,
except last sugar, and add to creamed mixture. Stir in raisins.
Roll dough into 1 inch balls; roll in sugar. Place balls 2 inches
apart on greased cookie sheets; flatten with bottom of sugar dipped
glass. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes until lightly browned.
