Mom's Cream of Tomato Soup

List of Ingredients
28 oz can chopped or diced tomatoes
1 Tbsp minced onion
1/4 tsp celery seed
1/2 tsp salt (optional, I think the tomatoes have plenty of salt
already)
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp basil
2 Tbsp butter
3 Tbsp flour
2 c milk
1 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
1/8 tsp baking soda
Recipe
In a sauce pan combine tomatoes, onion, celery seed, 1/2 tsp salt,
sugar and basil. Simmer, uncovered on low heat while you make the white
sauce.
In a large sauce pan melt butter. Stir in flour and cook, stirring
constantly for 2 minutes. Gradually add milk, stirring until smooth and
thickened. Add 1 tsp salt and pepper.
When ready to serve, stir baking soda into tomato mixture. Then stir
tomato mixture into milk mixture. Serve immediately.
