I put 15 split vanilla beans in a 750 ml bottle of good quality vodka (you have to pour off a little of the vodka so that the beans will fit into the bottle). Be sure to leave at least 2" head space. Put cap on tightly, and store in a dark place for about 3 months. Great, super strong vanilla. I haven't bought a bottle of vanilla extract in years.

BTW--I buy my vanilla beans from Penzey's, since they seem to have the freshest beans and the lowest price.
