Applesauce is easy for kids to make--plus
it's familiar and yummy!
List of Ingredients
3 pounds apples, quartered and cored
1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar, or to taste
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Recipe
Put the apples in a large, heavy saucepan. Add the water and cook over medium-low heat for 20 to 30 minutes. Stir the apples occasionally until softened.
Add the sugar. If the apples are very sweet, add less sugar. If tart, add a little more. Add the lemon juice and cinnamon. Stir and cook for about 1 minute longer. The applesauce will still be a chunky.
Remove the pan from the heat and let the sauce cool until lukewarm. Taste and adjust the seasoning.
Strain the applesauce through a medium sieve or mash it with a potato masher. Serve warm or cool completely.
Store applesauce in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days. Freeze for up to 2 months.
