Grandma Kayser's Coffee Cake

List of Ingredients

3 3/4 cups flour/divided
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 cup sugar
1 stick butter
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 cup applesauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 3/4 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped


Recipe

Cream together 1 1/2 cups flour, the sugar, butter and spices. Set aside 3/4 cup crumbs. Add eggs and vanilla to rest of crumbs. Sift 2 1/4 cups flour and and baking powder and add to batter, alternating with buttermilk and applesauce. Turn into greased and floured pan. Mix reserved crumbs with brown sugar and nuts. Sprinkle over batter in pan. Bake at 350 until toothpick inserted in center comes clean.
