    Grandma's Apple Slices

    Ingredients:
    2 cups + 2 tablespoons flour
    2/3 cup shortening
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 egg, separated
    1/2 cup milk
    5 cups or more sliced apples - NOT Red Delicious
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    2 tablespoons cinnamon
    1/2 stick butter, sliced (1/4 cup)
    Frosting (can be made from powdered sugar and softened butter)

    Directions:
    Mix 2 cups flour and salt in a bowl and set aside. In a small pan, beat 1 egg yolk and milk together. With a pastry cutter, cut shortening into flour and salt mixture until crumbly. Gradually add in egg and milk mixture until a soft dough is formed. Press or roll half of dough for the bottom crust and place in a pie pan or baking dish. Fill crust with apples until dish is full. Mix sugar, 2 tablespoon flour and cinnamon and sprinlkle on top of apples. Dot apples with butter slices and place 2nd half of crust on top. In a separate bowl, beat egg white and brush on crust with a pastry brush. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minues or until brown. Frost with butter and powdered sugar frosting while warm. Makes 6 to 8 servings.
