BROILED FRENCH BREAD
In place of dinner rolls, try this recipe at your next family dinner or buffet. We have seen a whole basket of it disappear before it went completely around the table! While it is delicious with fresh bakery bread, it is even better using your own homemade french bread. This recipe makes about 40 slices:
List of Ingredients
- 2 ea. Very fresh two foot long french bread baguettes.
- 2/3 C. Sweet (unsalted) butter.
Instructions
- Allow the butter to sit at room temperature until soft. Meanwhile, prepare a large cookie sheet or jellyroll pan by fully covering it with heavy foil.
- When the butter is soft and dinner is just ready to be served, slice off the two ends of each baguette, cutting squarely across. DO NOT cut diagonally. Continue to squarely cut one inch thick slices from each loaf.
- Immediately spread ONLY ONE SIDE of each slice lightly with butter and place butter-side-UP on the foil lined pan.
- Place the pan under your oven's broiler and cook until each slice is just slightly browned. Because the heat in most broilers is very uneven, watch the broiling very carefully, moving the slices around with tongs to get them equally toasted without burning them.
- Transfer the broiled bread to a towel lined bread basket, cover with another towel and serve at once.
Final Comments
You may also want to try this recipe using brown-and-serve baguettes, but homemade is decidedly the best.
