Recipe Introduction
Caution --- don't goof and switch the amounts of salt and sugar like atw did the first time she mixed these for Grandma Thea -- they will not rise no matter what you do and they do not taste good either-- you know we had to bake them and eat them even if they did not rise.
List of Ingredients
1 cup milk
2 tsp salt
1 oz yeast
1 1/2 cups lukewarm water
3 Tbsp sugar
1/2 cup melted oleo
2 eggs
7 cups flour
Recipe
Scald milk (heat till just before it boils) and pour over sugar and salt in mixing bowl. Cool to lukewarm. Soften yeast in lukewarm water. Add the yeast to the milk and enough flour (about 4 cups) to make a thick batter. Beat thoroughly. Let stand until light and foamy. Add melted oleo (must not be hot) and eggs. Beat well. Add enough flour to make a soft dough which can be handled easily. Sprinkle a little flour on board and turn dough onto board. Knead dough until smooth and satiny. Put dough into greased bowl, brush surface with lard to keep moist. Cover, let rise until double in bulk. Punch down, turn over and let rise again. Shape into buns and place on greased cookie sheet. Let rise a little. Bake at 400 to 425 for 20-25 minutes. Makes 3-4 dozen rolls.
