Cranberry-Orange Muffins

2 cups sifted all-purpose flour -- sifted
2/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
3/4 cup milk
3 tablespoons melted shortening or salad oil
3/4 cup raw cranberries, chopped
2 tablespoons grated orange rind
2 tablespoons chopped nuts
Recipe
Sift dry ingredients together into bowl. Measure remaining ingredients into a "hollow" in the dry ingredients. Stir only until all flour is moistened. Fill 12 greased muffin cups 2/3 full. Bake at 450 degrees F for 18 to 20 minutes.
Makes 1 dozen muffins.
If using self-rising flour, omit the baking powder and salt.
