    2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sift before measuring
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 1/4 cups light brown sugar, firmly packed
    1 teaspoon cinnamon
    1/2 cup butter or margarine
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1 egg, well beaten
    3/4 cup sour milk or buttermilk

    Preheat oven to 375°. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture looks like coarse meal; remove and set aside 3/4 cup of the mixture for topping. To mixture remaining in mixing bowl, add baking powder and soda. Beat in egg and buttermilk; beat until smooth. Turn into two greased 8-inch square pans. Sprinkle with reserved 3/4 cup topping. Bake at 375° for 25 minutes. Serve warm with butter.
