Quick: Farmhouse Buttermilk Date Nut Bread

- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup chopped dates
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
- Creamy Orange Glaze:
- 1 tablespoon cream
- 1/4 cup sifted powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons grated orange peel
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped walnuts
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease two 6x3" foil loaf pans.
- Beat together sugar, butter, egg, buttermilk and vanilla until mixture is blended.
- Add flour, baking soda and baking powder and beat until blended; do not overbeat.
- Stir in the dates, walnuts and orange peel.
- Divide batter between the prepared pans.
- Place pans on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350ºF oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until cake tester, inserted in center, comes out clean.
- Allow to cool in pans for 10 minutes, and then remove loaves from pan and continue cooling on a rack.
- Brush tops lightly with glaze
- For Glaze: Stir together all ingredients until blended.
- Yields 2 loaves.
- Freezes well; wrap in double thickness of plastic wrap and then foil.
- Remove wrappers while defrosting.
