    List of Ingredients


    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1/2 cup shortening
    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • 2 cups flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 2 teaspoons baking soda
    • 1/2 cup cocoa
    • 1/2 cup buttermilk
    • 1 cup boiling water
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • Buttercream Frosting:
    • 1 (16 ounce) package powdered sugar
    • 1/2 cup butter, softened
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 3 tablespoons cream (2 to 3 tablespoons)


    Instructions


    1. Cream sugars and shortening; add eggs and beat very well. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk, beating well after each addition. Fold in boiling water and vanilla.
    2. Pour in a greased 13x9" pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven (can also be baked in two 9" round pans for 25 to 30 minutes).
    3. Cool cake for 20 minutes. Invert onto serving platter. Cool cake completely. Frost with buttercream frosting.
