Dutchess Spice Cake

- 3/4 cup shortening, soft
- 1 1/4 cups brown sugar
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 eggs
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 3/4 teaspoon cloves
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- Optinal Additions For Raisin Nut Spice Cake:
- 1 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 2 tablespoons extra all-purpose flour
Instructions
- Grease and flour two 9 inch round cake pans or a 9x13 inch. Cream together the shortening, brown sugar and white sugar until fluffy. Beat in thoroughly, the eggs.
- Sift together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt. Stir in alternately with 1 1/2 cups buttermilk. Pour into prepared pans and bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes for layers or 50 minutes for oblong pan.
