- 4 large eggs, separated
- 3/4 cup butter, at room temperature
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
- In a medium sized bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer until stiff but not dry. Set aside.
- In a seperate mixing bowl, cream butter for 1 to 2 minutes; add the sugar and cream for another 2 minutes. Add egg yolks all at once and beat for another minute or until the mixture appears light and fluffy. Beat in the vanilla extract.
- In a seperate mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
- Add flour mixture to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Mix well after each addition but do not over beat. Fold beaten egg whites into batter.
- Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
