    Soup: Split Pea Soup

    List of Ingredients


    • 1(16 ounce) bag of dried split peas, rinsed and clean
    • 1 medium onion, finely diced
    • 3 medium carrots, finely diced
    • 2 stalks celery with leaves, finely diced
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • 2 meaty ham shanks or smoked ham hocks
    • 1 chicken bouillon cube
    • 1 bay leaf
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • 6 cups water


    Instructions


    1. Place the cleaned split peas in the bottom of the crockpot.

    2. Add the remaining vegetables to the crockpot.

    3. Add the ham shanks, chicken bouillon cube, bay leaf, salt and pepper.

    4. Add 6 cups water.

    5. Cover and cook on high 4 to 6 hours, or on low for 10 to 12 hours.

    6. Stir occasionally during cooking process.

    7. When done, remove the bay leaf and the ham shanks/hocks.

    8. Remove any ham from the bones, break into smaller pieces and return to the crockpot.

    9. Serve hot with crackers, hard rolls or cornbread.

    10. Serves 6
