    1 16- to 18-oz. pkg frozen puff pastry, thawed (2 sheets)
    1 slightly beaten egg white
    1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
    1 1/2 cups sharp white cheddar, shredded

    Preheat oven to 375. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Unfold puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface; brush on a layer of beaten egg white. Sprinkle half of the pepper and half of the cheese over pastry. Top with second sheet of puff pastry. Brush on another layer of egg white and sprinkle with remaining pepper and cheese. Place a sheet of wax paper over pastry, and with a rolling pin, roll out pastry so that the two sheets stick together. Now, cut rolled pastry into 1/2-inch strips. Gently twist each strip several times, lay each one on the baking sheet, and press the ends down to secure the twists. Bake for 18 minutes, or until golden brown. Transfer straws to a wire rack to cool.
